Housewarming Party 101

You found the new place, packed and unpacked a billion boxes, and now you're all moved in. Congratulations! Now it's time to party. Throwing a housewarming party is the perfect way to celebrate your big move. Here are a few basics to throwing the best housewarming bash you've ever seen.

Choose Your Timing: One of the nice things about a housewarming party is you don't have to worry too much about specific dates and times. Pick a day and time that the people in your circle are most likely to be free - could be a weekend, could be a weekday, could be an evening. Then let your guests know you're hosting an "open house" style party. Guests can come and go as they please during a window of time. You'll have a chance to connect with everyone individually, and your guests will be able to enjoy as much time in your new space as makes sense for them.

Set Up All Around Your Space: You're celebrating your new home or apartment - why not make the most of it? Set up several spaces for guests to gather throughout your home. This will give your new space a chance to shine, while also giving guests a chance to spread out and get comfortable.

Make a Pitcher-Based Drink Beforehand: One of the best parts of moving into a new place is showing it off. You'll likely spend lots of time during your party playing tour guide. That's not going to leave a lot of room for mixing and pouring cocktails. Instead, break out the unbreakable cups and whip up a pitcher-based cocktail. Your guests can serve themselves and you can spend your time showing off.

Put Your Guests to Work: Who says you have to wait until the house is ready to invite guests over? Try involving them in the process of readying your new space. Throw a painting party with beer and pizza. Have an unpacking party to get rid of the last of your boxes. Invite guests to help clean up your yard in exchange for drinks and a barbeque. Choose your guests wisely for this kind of party and you may be surprised by how happy they are to help.

Stay Simple: You just put a ton of time and energy into moving. Don't wear yourself down further by overdoing your housewarming. One of the benefits of this type of party is a built-in activity: viewing and appreciating your new space. All you really need to do on top of that is provide some finger foods and a few drinks. Skip the expensive and time-consuming prep and decorating. Focus on enjoying the space you worked so hard to get with the people you love the most. You earned it!
